Caribbean Playground is a sun-dappled disc that jigsaws the region into eight bright musical pieces, each with a surprisingly distinct sound.
Reggae dominates, getting its rub-a-dub-roasted warmth across by way of "Three Little Birds," "Jamaica Farewell," and others, but it doesn't drown out Trinidadian soca, Puerto Rican bomba, or Haiti's lovely, acoustic-heavy twoubadou. Add to that the vocal magnetism of a lot of these artists--Taj Mahal and the Wailers among them--and Putumayo's expected above-the-call packaging, and you get a CD that's cooler than a Kingston street fair, only easier on little kid ears (and lungs). -Tammy La Gorce

Putumayo releases some enjoyable compliation albums, Caribbean Playground included. However, not all the tracks on this collection are strong. This album is worth adding to your collection---but it not one that you'll continue playing over and over again.

I bought this CD for my two-week old son and now find myself playing for my own enjoyment as much as his. Lots of fun stuff - I particularly like Taj Mahal's track, Desmond Decker's "Jamaica Farewell", and "Little Anancy" - but every track on this CD is entertaining and interesting.
Great stuff. Truly fun for kids and adults.

But don't limit this collection to the playground just because of its title; many an adult - especially those new to the genre - will appreciate the variety, which includes a Louisiana zydeco band influenced by Caribbean culture (Keith Frank and the Soileau Zydeco Band).
