LIVE IN COPENHAGEN, PART 1 Rating
October 8, 2002 Rating: 5.0 stars

Both "A Night In Tunisia" and "Walkin" were recorded "live" in 1963 at the Montmartre Jazzhus, Copenhagen. Byas on tenor sax accompanied by European rhythm section that featured a very young Niels H.O. Pederson on string bass.

Fine live quartet recording of mainstream jazz. The tunes are bop standards with a couple of ballads. Byas was in great form, combining some of Bird's fluidness with the big tone of Coleman Hawkins. The tracks on "Tunisia" are better performed and recorded than those on "Walkin," but both recordings are very enjoyable.
